CONSTRUCTION OF FRAMES AND "GREEN"

Environmentally Responsible Construction

Every frame begins with 5/4” solid hardwood, from environmentally responsible managed resources in Washington and Oregon. Select premium grade lumber is chosen to prevent splintering and cracking. This grade lumber has fewer knots and ensures stronger furniture joints. These resources are carefully chosen based upon their quality of lumber, environmental impact as well as their proximity, in order to reduce excessive waste, transportation costs and fuel usage. All joints are double-doweled, glued, and screwed for extra strength. We do not use plywood, particle board or medium density fiberboard (MDF) in any of our frames. These materials do not form as strong of joints for the frame construction. Also, plywood, particle board and fiberboard contain formaldehyde, which can be harmful to your health.

Environmentally Responsible Materials and Finishes

We use water based finished to ensure low or no VOC (Volatile Organic Compounds) on all exposed wood frames. We also use natural jute for all webbing, twine and burlap. We attempt to recapture and re-use all excess materials.

Construction of Frames

The seating foundation is comprised of eight way hand-tied coils. The coils are tied directionally to each other, and then tied to the frame for lasting comfort and durability. Extra care is given to the selection of the gauge of wire, the alignment, the height and placement of each coil. The coils are comprised of more than 80% scrap or recycled material. The coils are attached to interwoven webbing, made from natural jute. The jute webbing gives a solid foundation of support for the coils. Jute is chosen for its resiliency, strength and durability. The natural webbing also helps to reduce noise.

We offer a variety of cushion options to provide maximum comfort and support. Optional down and feather fill is available in our premium cushions. These consist of 25% down and 75% feather, which are all-natural byproducts. Down and feather cushions are channel sewn in a down-proof ticking.

We build all of our own frames in our factory in California. By building our own frames, we are in complete control of the quality of our product. Our furniture is bench made, by hand, by highly skilled craftsmen and master upholsterers. We believe that by using the best materials and the best construction practices, we are putting our resources to their best use. Our furniture is built to last. Our furniture should be recycled through re-use or reupholstery.
